Terrain-X is a standalone slope, aspect, and elevation analysis tool for onX Hunt Elite Members, available from the onX Hunt Web Map. It lets you visualize slope angle, slope aspect, elevation bands, and viewshed to better read terrain while scouting. To keep the terrain view clear, Terrain-X hides private land boundaries, public land boundaries, and rec points.

Accessing the Terrain-X tool
- Log in to the onX Hunt Web Map.
- Click Terrain-X on the right side of the screen. The tool opens in a new browser tab titled "onX Labs."
Using the basic map controls

Use the up and down arrows in the lower right corner to tilt the map.

Use the left and right arrows to rotate the map.

Use the scroll wheel on your mouse, or the plus and minus buttons, to zoom in and out.

Use the target button to center the map on your current location, or the globe button to reset the map's rotation and tilt to default.

Click the Waypoint button to drop waypoints on your map. Waypoints you create in Terrain-X can be viewed and edited from the My Content menu in the onX Hunt App or Web Map.

Use the slider buttons in the tools panel on the left to turn the Slope Angle, Slope Aspect, and Elevation Band tools on or off.
Using the slope angle tool
Use this tool to find steep slopes or flat spots in mountainous terrain. Slope angle is the angle a slope makes with the horizontal. Click and drag the sliders to set the range of slope angles you want to see.
Slopes within your selected range are highlighted on the map.
Using the slope aspect tool
Slope aspect is the compass direction a slope faces—if you're heading down a pitch, the direction you're facing is the slope's aspect. Forecasters commonly divide terrain into eight octants: north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest. Snowpack and avalanche hazard can change dramatically between aspects due to differences in wind and sun exposure. Learn more about slope aspect from avalanche.org.

Using the elevation band tool
Use this tool to identify areas within a specific elevation range. Click and drag the sliders up and down to set the range.
Elevation bands within your selected range are highlighted on the map.
Using the viewshed tool
The Viewshed tool shows what's visible from any point on the map. Once enabled, the viewshed follows your cursor.
Areas visible from the viewshed's location are highlighted on the map. Double right-click the map to fix the viewshed in place.
