Compass Mode helps you orient yourself with landmarks or terrain features using your distance and heading relative to True North and is a valuable tool for navigating when you're deep in the backcountry or unfamiliar territory.
Use the Rangefinder feature in conjunction with Compass Mode to place Waypoints at a specific distance—great for marking locations you can’t physically reach yet.
How to use Compass Mode
Open the Tools menu and tap Compass Mode to view your current heading (based on True North) and a distance scale.
Alternatively:

Tap the Location button
twice.

Tap the Compass icon
to enter Compass Mode.
Your compass heading is shown at the top of your screen and updates as you rotate your phone.
- Use the center/sight line and tick marks to estimate your distance to areas within your line of sight.

Tap the Lock icon
to freeze or unfreeze your current heading and prevent the map from rotating.
How to use the Rangefinder
Tap the Rangefinder icon
to drop a Waypoint at a specific point while using Compass
Mode.
- Place a finger on the screen and slide it up or down to adjust placement.

Tap the Add Waypoint button
.
- Make any desired edits.
- Tap Done to save it to your My Content list.
Tap the Lock icon
to freeze or unfreeze your current heading and prevent the map
from rotating.
Tap Exit to return to a normal map view.
