If you want to use the onX Hunt App in areas without cell service, download Offline Maps before you head out. Offline Maps stores Basemap and Map Layer data directly on your device, so everything in the saved area is available without a signal.
How to save an Offline Map from the Hunt App
- Tap Offline Maps in the bottom toolbar.
- Tap New Offline Map.
- Adjust the map area by dragging and zooming.
- Choose a detail level—Low, Medium, or High—and tap Next.
- Name your map and tap Save.
How to save an Offline Map from your computer
You can't use Offline Maps directly on a computer, but you can create them from the Web Map and sync them to your mobile device.
- Log in to the Hunt Web Map at onxmaps.com.
- Click Offline Maps in the left-side toolbar.
- Click New Offline Map.
Tip: Use Offline Map Preview on the Web Map to compare detail levels before saving.
Using the App without cell service
Once your Offline Maps are downloaded, your GPS location will still appear on the map without a signal. To enable Offline Mode:
- Open Offline Maps and tap Go Offline, or
- Turn on Airplane mode (saves battery).
To return online, tap the red Offline button or exit Airplane mode.
Your Offline Maps are identified in the Offline Maps menu by their download status:

Green checkmark and solid green border—downloaded and ready to use.

Download icon and red/white border—not yet downloaded. Tap to download.
Managing your Offline Maps
To edit or remove a downloaded map, tap the three dots next to its name in the Offline Maps menu:
- Edit: change the map name or add notes.
- Remove: clears the local data from your device without deleting the map from your account.
- Delete: permanently removes the map from your account.
Frequently asked questions
Can I share Offline Maps with someone else?
No—each person needs to download maps to their own device.
Can I save maps in landscape orientation?
No—maps are saved in portrait orientation only.
Why isn't the map I saved from my computer showing on my phone?
Close and reopen the App, or drag down the top of the Offline Maps menu to refresh.
What does "Update Available" mean?
New data is available for that map. Tap to update and make sure you're seeing the latest information.
Will I still see my location offline?
Yes—GPS works without cell service. If your location isn't showing, tap the Location button and check your device's location permissions.
What's the difference between Low, Medium, and High detail?
Higher detail maps show more information but cover a smaller area and use more storage. For the best coverage, save High detail maps nested inside Low or Medium detail maps.
