Before heading somewhere without cell service, take a few minutes to verify your Offline Maps are downloaded, up to date, and working correctly. Most users won't run into issues—but corrupted cached data, outdated Offline Maps, or missing Map Layers are the most common causes of problems in the field. This checklist walks you through catching them before you leave.
Step 1: Sync and update your Offline Maps
Maps saved from another device should automatically sync to your current device with internet connectivity—if you don't see newly saved Offline Maps on the device you're using, place a finger in the center of the Offline Maps menu, drag down until you see a buffering symbol, and release
Ensure your Offline Maps are fully updated—open the Hunt App, tap Offline Maps in the bottom toolbar, then tap the three dots in the upper-right corner and select Update All Maps if the option is available.
Step 2: Confirm your maps are downloaded to this device
A map saved to your account isn't the same as a map downloaded to your phone. Check the icon next to each map name in the Offline Maps menu to confirm its status.
A downward arrow means the map isn't on your device yet. Tap it to download.
Two vertical lines mean the map is downloading. Tap to pause.
A play symbol means the download is paused. Tap to resume.
A red circle with an exclamation mark means the download failed. Tap to retry.
A green circle with a checkmark means the map is on your device and ready to use.
Step 3: Test your maps in airplane mode
Before you leave, simulate what your device will look like in the field by putting it into airplane mode and disconnecting from Wi-Fi. This lets you catch any issues—blurry maps, missing layers, or corrupted data—while you still have service to fix them.
Force close the onX Hunt App first, then enable airplane mode and disconnect from Wi-Fi:
- Force close an app on iPhone or iPad.
- Enable airplane mode on iPhone or iPad.
- Force close an app on Android.
- Enable airplane mode on Android.
Reopen the onX Hunt App to the Offline Maps menu—the toggle to Only use offline maps should be turned on and Offline should be displayed at the top of your screen in red text. This confirms you're fully disconnected.
Use the Map Layers menu to turn on all the layers you'll need in the field, and zoom in on your hunting area to confirm everything looks sharp and complete.
If the map appears blurry, blotchy, or layers aren't rendering correctly, proceed to Step 4.
Step 4: Delete and re-download if something looks wrong
Blurry or incomplete maps are usually caused by corrupted cached data or an outdated Offline Map. Deleting and re-downloading the map almost always fixes this.
Reconnect to the internet, then open the Offline Maps menu and tap the three dots to the right of the map name to delete them.
Tap New Offline Map at the top of the Offline Maps menu and re-download the same area. Once it's downloaded, repeat Step 3 to confirm everything looks right before you head out.
