Most of what you see on your map comes from two sources: Basemaps and Map Layers.
Basemaps give you a reference view—think Satellite, Topo, or Hybrid—while Map Layers add detail on additional information like land ownership, game management units, motorized access, and more.
Here’s how to use Map Layers to get the most from your onX Hunt experience.

Using State-specific Map Layers
Depending on your level of Membership, you may have access to one, two, or all of the State-specific Map Layer collections in onX Hunt.
Tap the Map Layers button in the lower-left corner of your screen in the Hunt App to view which Map Layers are turned on or off.
If you have a paid membership, you’ll see a collection for your state near the top of the menu. It’ll show how many layers are available and how many are currently active.
Tap a State Layer collection to see all available Map Layers for that state, and tap "Details" to preview how a particular Layer is displayed on your Map.
If you don't see a state collection at the top of the menu, you don't have your state turned on—scroll down in the Map Layers menu and tap the toggle button next to your desired state to turn it on and view available Layers.
Elite users will need to turn on the Map Layers for any additional states to see related info.
Sublayers
A layer icon displayed for a particular Map Layer shows you there are additional "sublayers" available.
Tapping "View options" allows you to see which sublayers are available and turned on. To select a different one, tap the related slider button.
Using General Map Layers
All General Map Layers are available with any paid Membership (with the exception of the Slope Angle/Aspect Layers) and are listed underneath any State collections you've turned on.
We recommend looking through these categories and getting familiar with the Map Layers available in each to ensure you're getting the most out of your Hunt Membership.
If you see an overlay on your map and aren't sure what it is, chances are it's from an active Map Layer.
To find out what it is, you can either turn off ALL your Map Layers or tap the overlay to view more info.
For example, in the image below, we can tap on the overlay and see that it's related to a Map Layer displaying National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) species distribution data. To remove the overlay, open the Map Layers menu and turn the related Map Layer off.
Access Note - It’s up to the hunter to know where you stand, but onX Hunt can help.
We aim to provide you with key information for planning your hunt, as well as guidance on how to use that information to find areas to hunt. Keep in mind that government-owned properties aren't always publicly accessible and may be subject to special restrictions, so it’s best to check with the managing agency and always obey posted signage.
Roads displayed on the map may include state, county, and private roads and do not connote public access. Tap on the property to find the managing agency (e.g. Bureau of Land Management, National Forest, etc) that can answer your access questions.
