My maps look blurry or unclear

If your maps look blurry or unclear in onX Hunt, the cause can be related to whether you're online, offline, or using the Web Map. Work through the relevant section below to fix issues most frequently associated with a blurry map.

Maps are blurry when connected to the internet

1. Make sure the App is up to date

Learn how to update the onX Hunt App.

2. Check your internet connection

Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data and isn't in Airplane Mode. Airplane Mode disconnects you from the internet entirely.

3. Check your mobile data signal strength

A weak signal slows your connection and can cause blurry maps. Check the signal bars at the top of your screen—one or two bars means your signal is low. Move to an area with stronger coverage, or save Offline Maps before heading out to areas with unreliable service. Learn how to save Offline Maps.

4. Check if Recent Satellite Imagery is turned on

If your map is blurry or shows heavy cloud cover, Recent Satellite Imagery may be enabled. Look above the Map Layers button for a dark rectangle with a date range. If you see it, tap the Basemaps button and turn off Recent Satellite Imagery.

5. Clear the App's map cache

iPhone and iPad: Tap the Main Menu button, tap Settings, scroll to the bottom, and tap Clear Map Cache.

Android: Make sure you're connected to the internet before clearing the cache.

Heads up: Clearing the cache on Android will log you out of the App and remove any saved Offline Maps from your device. Your saved Markups won't be affected. Once you log back in, you can redownload your maps from the Offline Maps menu.

Go to Settings > Apps > onX Hunt > Storage, then tap Clear Data and Clear Cache.

Tip: If clearing the cache resolved the issue, the blurry maps were likely caused by the App loading without a stable connection and without a saved Offline Map for that area. Save Offline Maps of your favorite hunting spots before heading out to prevent this from happening again. Learn more about Offline Maps.

Maps are blurry in Offline Mode or Airplane Mode

1. Make sure the App is up to date

Connect to the internet and update the onX Hunt App before going offline.

2. Check that your Offline Maps are downloaded

Open the Offline Maps menu and check the icon next to each saved map. A downward-pointing arrow means the map hasn't been downloaded to your device yet. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data and tap the arrow to download it.

3. Check that your Offline Maps are up to date

In the Offline Maps menu, check the text beneath each map name. If you see Update available, connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data and tap the green checkmark icon next to the map to update it.
